Project Details
A slope collapse occurred at the 10.1K southbound section of Freeway No. 1. Two slide events took place — at 11:21am on 2022/11/1 and 6:50pm on 11/2 — affecting a slide area of about 1 hectare, with depths ranging from 3–10m and an estimated earth/rock volume of about 40,000 cubic meters.
The slope protection for the first slide mainly consisted of frame structures and shotcrete; the sliding earth and rock pushed against roadside guardrails, the pavement, gantry structures and other facilities, and covered the ramp and collector road surfaces. During emergency response to the second slide, continuous on-site rainfall and loosened residual slope material on the steep high slope caused a further slide while emergency crews were driving H-beams to reinforce the slope toe and carrying out drainage works.
To effectively monitor the slope and retaining wall conditions during construction, a total station and IoT wireless electronic tiltmeters are used for continuous 24-hour measurement, with the automated monitoring system serving as a management reference — enabling timely and appropriate response measures whenever safety concerns arise, in support of road user safety management.

Outcome & Value
The total station and IoT wireless electronic tiltmeters provided 24-hour continuous monitoring data, serving as a safety management reference during the slope-slide emergency response, and providing a basis for response decisions under preset alert thresholds.
